  2. Pick the account Choose the account the transactions belong to, or let the app create one.
  3. Check the result Compare the imported transactions with the preview you checked here.

QuickBooks Online

  1. Upload the file Intuit's help pages list OFX among the file types QuickBooks Online's bank upload accepts. For QuickBooks, a QBO file is the format Intuit recommends; choose QBO before you download if that's where it's going.

What an OFX file contains

OFX (Open Financial Exchange) is an open standard for exchanging financial data, maintained today by the OFX work group at the Financial Data Exchange. A bank statement in OFX holds the account (bank ID, account number and account type, or a card number), the currency, the list of transactions with a type, date, amount, unique ID, name and memo, and the ledger balance. The converter writes every required part in the order the specification sets.

Which OFX version to choose

The converter writes OFX 1.02 by default: tagged text, the same form as the QBO and QFX files it makes. Choose OFX 2.2 under More options when your app asks for XML. Both hold the same account, transactions and balance.

Where to use the OFX file

  • QuickBooks Online lists .ofx among the file types its Upload from file option takes.
  • Quicken for Mac imports OFX files with File › Import › Bank or Brokerage File (OFX, QFX).
  • QuickBooks Desktop reads only .qbo files through Web Connect; choose QBO instead.

Supported banks and file layouts

Any bank's CSV or Excel file

The converter finds the header row (even below bank names and account summaries), matches columns by name and by content, and handles one signed amount column, separate debit and credit columns, or an amount with a DR/CR column. Dates like 01/05/2026, 2026-01-05 and Jan 5, 2026 and amounts like (1,234.56) or 1234.56- are all read.

Common problems and fixes

My app shows the dates one day off
The converter writes each date with a time of 12:00 GMT, so it falls on the same calendar day in every US time zone. If your app still shifts dates, tell us which app it is.
My app asks for OFX 2 (XML)
Open More options before you download and choose OFX 2.2 (XML). OFX 1.02 (SGML) is the default because older programs read it.
Long descriptions are cut short
OFX keeps names to 32 characters. The converter cuts the name to 32 characters and puts the full text in the memo, which allows up to 255.
Transactions are imported twice
Each transaction has an ID (FITID) built from its date, amount, description, memo and check number, so converting the same CSV again gives the same IDs. Apps that use FITIDs can then skip transactions they already have.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert CSV to OFX?

Drop the CSV into the converter above, check the columns and transactions, choose OFX and download. The OFX file is made in your browser.

Which OFX version does it write?

OFX 1.02 (SGML) by default, or OFX 2.2 (XML) if you choose it under More options. Both follow the official OFX specification.

What is the difference between OFX, QBO and QFX?

QBO and QFX files are OFX statements with Intuit's extra bank ID, made for QuickBooks and Quicken. A plain OFX file has no Intuit tags and is for other apps.

Can I import the OFX file into QuickBooks Desktop?

Not with Web Connect, which reads only .qbo files. Choose QBO in the converter instead; it is an OFX statement with the bank ID QuickBooks checks.

Does the OFX file include a bank ID?

A plain OFX file made here leaves out Intuit's bank ID, which only QuickBooks and Quicken use. Choose QBO or QFX when the file is for one of them.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The CSV is read and converted in your browser and never leaves your computer.
