Downloading transactions from American Express
American Express’s help says the last two years of transactions can be sorted, filtered and downloaded from your online account as PDF, Excel or CSV files. Amex doesn’t publish click-by-click steps on a public page: sign in, open your recent or past transactions, and look for the download option. Choose CSV; the detailed version (with the extra columns) works best.
The American Express CSV layout
The detailed download has these columns:
| Column | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Date | The transaction date |
| Description | The merchant |
| Card Member, Account # | Who used the card (detailed download only) |
| Amount | Charges positive, payments and credits negative |
| Extended Details, Appears On Your Statement As | More about the merchant |
| Address, City/State, Zip Code, Country | The merchant’s address |
| Reference | Amex’s reference number, with a leading apostrophe |
| Category | Amex’s spending category |
The converter uses the date, description and amount (with the sign flipped), keeps the reference number, and leaves out the card member and address columns.
The card account in QuickBooks
Import the QBO file into your American Express credit card account in QuickBooks. The account type in the file is set to credit card for the recognized Amex layout, so the file matches a card account. In Intuit’s QuickBooks list, the American Express entries are marked for card accounts.
Supported banks and file layouts
Any bank's CSV or Excel file
The converter finds the header row (even below bank names and account summaries), matches columns by name and by content, and handles one signed amount column, separate debit and credit columns, or an amount with a DR/CR column. Dates like 01/05/2026, 2026-01-05 and Jan 5, 2026 and amounts like (1,234.56) or 1234.56- are all read.

Common problems and fixes
- Charges show as money in
- Turn on Flip signs. It is on automatically for the recognized Amex layout; if your file was edited or has only Date, Description and Amount, turn it on yourself.
- The file has only Date, Description and Amount
- That short layout is common to many banks, so the converter doesn't assume it is from Amex. Check the columns and turn on Flip signs.
- Reference numbers start with an apostrophe
- Amex adds an apostrophe so spreadsheets keep the long number intact. The converter removes it.
- Some descriptions run over several lines
- The detailed Amex download puts line breaks inside the Extended Details and Address fields. They are read correctly and don't break the rows.
