How to split a QBO file

  1. Drop the file into the tool QBO, QFX, OFX and QIF files work, and so do bank CSV and Excel files whose columns can be matched automatically.
  2. Choose how to split By month, by a number of transactions per file, or by a date range you pick.
  3. Choose the output format and account settings Keep QBO for QuickBooks, or pick QFX, OFX, QIF, CSV, Excel or the QuickBooks Online CSV layout.
  4. Download each part Each part has its own Download button and its own file name with its dates.

How to import the parts into QuickBooks

Import the parts in date order, one at a time. These steps follow Intuit's current help pages.

QuickBooks Desktop for Windows

  1. Sign in to your Intuit account Intuit requires you to be signed in inside QuickBooks Desktop to import .qbo files.
  2. Open the import Choose Banking › Bank Feeds › Import Web Connect Files, select the .qbo file and click Open.
  3. Choose the account Choose Use an existing account if the account is already in QuickBooks, or Create a new QuickBooks account. Click Continue, then OK.
  4. Add the transactions Review them in the Bank Feeds Center and add them.

If the import fails, Intuit's fixes include switching to Classic Mode: Banking › Bank Feeds › Change Bank Feeds Mode.

QuickBooks Desktop for Mac

  1. Open the import Choose Banking › Downloaded Transactions › Import File.
  2. Pick the file Select the .qbo file.
  3. Choose the account If QuickBooks asks, pick the matching account under Store in the QuickBooks Account, then click Continue and OK.

QuickBooks Online

  1. Open Bank transactions Choose All apps › Accounting › Bank transactions. Older menus start at Banking or Transactions.
  2. Choose Upload from file Select the account's tile if you see one, open Link account and choose Upload from file.
  3. Pick the file and the account Select the .qbo file and click Continue. Choose the account in the QuickBooks account list and click Continue.
  4. Import Select the transactions to import, click Continue, then Yes and Done.

Intuit's limits for one upload: 350 KB per file and up to 1,000 lines.

When to split a file

  • QuickBooks Online upload limits. Intuit’s help for manual uploads gives a limit of 350 KB per file and 1,000 lines per upload. A long bank export can be over that.
  • One period at a time. Bookkeepers often import and reconcile month by month, and a part per month matches the bank statements.
  • Smaller, easier checks. A file per month is easier to compare with the bank statement before importing.
  • Only some dates needed. When a download covers more than you need, a date range keeps just that period.

What each part contains

Each part is a complete file in the format you choose. For QBO, QFX and OFX, it has the account details, the start and end dates of that part, and every transaction with its original ID. Because the IDs don’t change, importing the parts one after another gives the same result as importing the whole file, and importing a part twice doesn’t create duplicates in QuickBooks or Quicken.

Splitting for QuickBooks Online

For a CSV upload, choose QuickBooks Online CSV as the output so each part also has the layout QuickBooks Online accepts. Then split by number of transactions, set to 1,000 or fewer, or by month when no month has more than that. The QuickBooks Online CSV formatter explains the layout.

Supported banks and file layouts

QBO, QFX, OFX and QIF files from any bank

The reader handles both forms of OFX (the older SGML form used by QBO and QFX files, and the newer XML form), bank and credit card statements, and files that hold more than one account. QIF files from Quicken and other apps are read too, including Quicken's old date styles.

Any bank's CSV or Excel file

The converter finds the header row (even below bank names and account summaries), matches columns by name and by content, and handles one signed amount column, separate debit and credit columns, or an amount with a DR/CR column. Dates like 01/05/2026, 2026-01-05 and Jan 5, 2026 and amounts like (1,234.56) or 1234.56- are all read.

Common problems and fixes

QuickBooks Online says the file is too big
Intuit's help says a manually uploaded file must be 350 KB or less, with up to 1,000 lines per upload. Split by month or choose a number of transactions so each part stays under those limits.
The parts overlap
They can't. Every transaction goes into exactly one part, in date order.
Will the parts import as duplicates?
No. Each transaction keeps its ID (FITID) from the original file, so QuickBooks and Quicken see each transaction once, whichever part it is in.
A month has no file
Splitting by month makes a part only for months that have transactions, so a month without any has no file.
I only need some of the dates
Choose Date range and set the first and last date. The tool makes one file with just those transactions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a QBO file by month?

Drop the QBO file into the tool above, choose Month, and download each month's file.

Can I split a CSV file the same way?

Yes, if the converter can match its columns automatically. Otherwise convert it first with the CSV to QBO converter, then split the result.

How many transactions should each part have for QuickBooks Online?

Up to 1,000 lines per upload, and the file must be 350 KB or less. A smaller number, such as 500, leaves room.

Does splitting change the transactions?

No. Dates, amounts, names, memos and transaction IDs stay the same; only the file they are in changes.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file is read and split in your browser.
