Downloading account activity from Wells Fargo

Wells Fargo’s help page “How can I download my account history?” gives these steps:

  1. Sign on to Wells Fargo Online and choose the account.
  2. Under the Accounts tab, open Download Account Activity and fill in the form.
  3. Confirm the From and To dates. The default is the last 90 days; some account types allow up to 18 months.
  4. Select Comma Delimited (ASCII, Spreadsheet).
  5. Click Download and save the file. Use a different file name for each account.

The Wells Fargo CSV layout

The file has no header row. Each line has five quoted fields:

PositionWhat it holds
1Date, MM/DD/YYYY
2Amount, signed (money out negative in checking files)
3A status mark, *
4Check number, usually empty
5Description

Because there are no column names, the converter checks the shape of the rows (a date first, an amount second and the status mark third) before it treats a file as a Wells Fargo download. Any other five-column file is read by its contents instead, and you can check the columns.

The bank ID

QuickBooks and Quicken check the bank ID in every QBO and QFX file. Wells Fargo’s ID, 03000, is in Intuit’s QuickBooks and Quicken lists for bank and card accounts, and it is the converter’s widely compatible option, so the file you download is labelled as Wells Fargo either way.

Supported banks and file layouts

Any bank's CSV or Excel file

The converter finds the header row (even below bank names and account summaries), matches columns by name and by content, and handles one signed amount column, separate debit and credit columns, or an amount with a DR/CR column. Dates like 01/05/2026, 2026-01-05 and Jan 5, 2026 and amounts like (1,234.56) or 1234.56- are all read.

Common problems and fixes

The file shows "Column 1", "Column 2" and so on
Wells Fargo's file has no header row. When the five columns match the Wells Fargo layout the converter names them for you; if they don't (for example after editing in Excel), choose the date, amount and description columns under Change columns.
Card amounts have the wrong sign
Wells Fargo card files have the same five columns, but which sign purchases carry isn't documented. Look at a purchase in the table; if it shows as a positive number, turn on Flip signs so a $50 purchase shows as −50.00.
I need more than 90 days
Wells Fargo's help says the download covers the last 90 days by default and up to 18 months for some account types. Change the From and To dates on the download form.
Two accounts ended up in one file
Download each account separately and give each file its own name, as Wells Fargo's help suggests.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a Wells Fargo CSV to QBO?

Download the account activity as Comma Delimited, drop the file into the converter above, check the transactions, keep QBO and download.

Why does the Wells Fargo CSV have no headings?

That is how Wells Fargo writes it, five quoted columns per line - date, amount, a status mark, check number and description - with no header row.

Which bank ID does the QBO file use?

Wells Fargo (03000) is in Intuit's bank lists for both QuickBooks and Quicken, and it is the converter's widely compatible option, so a Wells Fargo file keeps its own bank.

Are check numbers kept?

Yes. The fourth column holds the check number when there is one, and it goes into the QBO file's check number field.

Is my Wells Fargo file uploaded?

No. It is read and converted in your browser and never leaves your computer.
